1905

Partition of Bengal. Anti-Partition Movement began.

 

1906

Foundation of the Muslim League

 

1907

Congress split between extremists and moderates.

 

1909

Morley-Minto Reforms.

 

1911

Partition of Bengal revoked. First inland airmail flight.

 

1913

Nobel Prize for Rabindranath Tagore.

 

1914

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi returned to India from South Africa, where he had organized the Indian community there to oppose the white supremicist government through a technique of non-violent agitation he called "satyagraha"

 

1915-1916 :

Mahatma Gandhi toured India and Burma, traveling 3rd class on the railways.

 

1914-1918

World War I: large numbers of Indians, Hindu and Muslim, rallied to the British cause and 1.2 million Indians gave valiant service to the war effort. .

 

 

1916

The Lucknow Pact united the Congress and the League in their fight for independence from Britain

1917 

Mahatma Gandhi moves to Ashram on the bank of Sabarmati river.

 

Mahatma Gandhi visits Champaran (Bihar) to investigate conditions of labor in indigo plantations

  

1918

Mahatma Gandhi  took up cause of textile laborers of Ahmedabad and; initiates Satyagraha in Kheda District (Bombay) to secure suspension of revenue assessment of failure of groups

 

 1919

Jalianwalabagh Massacre at Amritsar in the Punjab, when British troops fire on a huge assembly of people protesting British rule.

Mohandas K. Gandhi emerged as a formidable Indian leader in the independence movement.

Gandhi called upon all Indian people to meet British repression with Satyagraha—non-violent resistance.

 

1920-1922

Gandhi instituted the Non-Cooperation Movement-(calling for boycotts of British commodities, courts, and educational institutions; noncooperation in political life, and renunciation of British titles held by Indians), Khilafat Movement

 

 1921

156,000 British citizens rule over 306 million Indian subjects

Demonstrations and hartals greet Crown Prince of Great Britain in India

  

1925

Mahatma Gandhi founds All-India Spinners' Association.

  

Mahatma Gandhi starts writing his autobiography, The Story of My Experiments with Truth
