Qn 106  The current natural Uranium reserves in the country are around 50000 metric tonnes, primarily concentrated in the Jadugarha mines in Bihar. The country’s Thorium reserves stand at 300000 MT, primarily located in the Monazite sands of Kerala. Natural Uranium contains only 0.7% U-235, which means that the utilizable fuel reserves are extremely low in case of Uranium as fuel. India actually imports a major proportion of its requirements every year. Indian Thorium reserves in the monazite sand of Kerala amount to 1000 BTCE (Billion tonnes coal equivalent). Our coal reserves are at 190 BTCE. The Uranium – 235 reserves compare at 1 BTCE while Uranium fuel which can be used in fast breeder reactors stand at around 130 BTCE.

Comparatively, Thorium is of much higher strategic interest for the country, given its abundance and close to 140 times more effective. The risk of proliferation is also very low as U-233 is produced along with host of other isotopes like U-234 and U-236. Separating bomb-grade U-233 shall require highly sophisticated isotope separation techniques. http://www.iimcal.ac.in/imz/archive/article.asp?code=sep_05_04
