Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in Sports and Gamesis was instituted in 1991–92
It is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years
Earlier, apart from a medal and a citation, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardees received a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh each.
The award was given for the performance by a sportsperson in a year.
Based on the suggestions provided by 2014 award selection committee, the Ministry revised the criteria in February 2015 to consider the performance over a period of four years.
As of 2020, the award comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of ₹25 lakh
On 6 August 2021 PM Modi announced renaming of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour of India, as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
